Beyond the Sanctuary

Purpose of Campaign »     |     Pastor's Stewardship CD »     |     How to Give »

My brothers and sisters,

It is truly an exciting time in the life of United Metropolitan Baptist Church (UMMBC). We are embarking on a spiritual journey rooted in faith, prayer, and an unwavering commitment to God.  The journey is United’s Lifestyle Capital Stewardship Campaign. Our theme is: “Beyond the Sanctuary”.

Our church history bears witness to the power of faith. West End Baptist Church, one of the two churches out of which UMMBC was birthed, was formed in 1892 in order to provide a house of worship in a part of the city where African Americans could not comfortably or conveniently attend church. What began as an in-home Sunday School class blossomed into a thriving congregation.

First Institutional Baptist Church, which merged with West End to form UMMBC, was founded in 1924 as a small prayer band.  Before long, prayer produced a congregation.  The members gave sacrificially to raise 1/3 of the cost of a permanent meeting place in their first 30 days as a congregation.

It is fitting to acknowledge our history, because we are not the first to step out on faith.  Many have come before us and there are generations that will come after us.  We honor the legacy of those who came before us by building upon the foundation they gave us.  Who knows what God will do with this generation’s faith, sacrifice, and prayer?  It is written in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

In 2001, UMMBC completed the Restoration Campaign that facilitated the renovations of the building in which we now worship.  Because of this new, modern and well-appointed facility and our providential location near downtown, we are divinely positioned to be a safe refuge and a spiritual resource for our community, our members, and even to God’s people around the world.  It is obvious that in order to take full advantage of the possibilities before us and intentionally increase our mission and ministry, God is calling us to stretch and truly be the missionary church we aspire to be.  We are beginning a 3-year Lifestyle Capital Stewardship Campaign.

Very shortly, you will be contacted by campaign leaders and invited to participate in this journey of faith, “Beyond the Sanctuary”. Every gift from every member is important to prepare our church for ministry that will touch lives for generations to come.  I hope you will say “yes”.

To God be the Glory!
